Update from Seminarian Andrew Rapoport

The following is a letter from seminarian Andrew Rapoport, FSSP, who recently visited Sacred Heart Church in Hollister and assisted our Chaplain Fr. Nicholas Milich at Mass:

Dear Monterey Latin Mass Community,

It was a pleasure being able to visit for Mass on the Octave Day of the Nativity. It has been a while since I've informed the community on my progress here at the seminary, so a quick update is due.

After spending a month at the FSSP parish in Vancouver, B.C. this past summer, I stared my sixth year of Seminary in August. My Fall semester went well. I had a number of different theology classes and Homiletics. Learning how to preach was challenging but I certainly enjoyed the experience.

My second semester of the sixth year started this past week. My class schedule will be pretty busy. I have Bioethics, Theological Virtues, a class on the Sacrament of Penance, a music class and Scripture.

I was informed recently by the Superior General that I have been approved for ordination to the Subdiaconate, the Diaconate and permanent incorporation into the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter. The ordination to the Subdiaconate will be Feb. 11th. and the Diaconate ordination will be on March 25th., both are here in Nebraska. I ask that you please keep me in your prayers. These ordinations are open to the public, so if anyone from the community is interested in attending please let me know.

This summer will be quite eventful for me. God willing, my whole class of ten will be visiting the Fraternity's seminary in Germany in June. While there, we will attend the priestly ordinations. We will do much sight seeing and have an opportunity to take part in the Chartres pilgrimage.

After a month in Germany, I hope to take advantage of being in Europe and do some traveling of my own. I plan to visit Rome, Spain and Portugal. As this year marks the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of Fatima, I greatly look forward to visiting Our Lady's shrine. If time permits I will also visit the Portuguese islands of the Azores (I am part Portuguese and still have some distant relatives on the islands).

After this time in Europe, I plan to go to Nigeria. One of my good friends, Deacon Charles Ike, is from Nigeria and will be ordained to the priesthood there. I volunteered to help with his ordination which will be on August 15th. During that time, I will help at the Fraternity's mission parish as well as help with a boys camp.

Following this busy summer, by God's grace I will return for my seventh and final year of seminary.

I would like to thank you for the support you have given me these past years. The fundraiser which which was held last year was a great success; the money which was raised along with annual donations which I receive have been enough to cover my tuition for at least the rest of this year.

I will need, however, to come up with the funds to cover my trip to Nigeria; this includes a travel visa, vaccinations and a flight from Europe to Nigeria. I would greatly appreciate any financial assistance that you might be willing to offer (no matter how small the donation).

I greatly appreciate all of your prayers. Please continue to pray for me as I approach Holy Orders. Be assured of my prayers the Latin Mass Community.

In Jesus and Mary,
Andrew

JMJ Home Christmas outreach update

JMJ Home Christmas outreach update:
This coming Sunday I will have the JMJ Home tree set up again in the vestibule of Sacred Heart Church for anyone that was unable to pick an ornament, or maybe you want to grab another one.
There are 5 children ornaments and 6 mom gift card ornaments left. The amount on the gift card is your choice. It gives the mom a chance to buy whatever need may come up or get something for herself.
One mom is asking for pots, pans and dishes. She was a resident with her son and they just moved out 2 weeks ago. She has a steady job and was able to get a home of their own. That is why she is requesting those items.
We have been invited to the home on Saturday, December 17th. at 4:30. Bring the gifts and a dish to share. They so enjoy our presence and love to give thanks in person. If you are able to make it please R.S.V.P. to me, so that I can give the director an idea of numbers.
Thank you for opening your hearts and wallets this Advent season.

Update:
Happy Advent! This Sunday is the day to bring the gifts for the Jesus Mary Joseph home. Please bring the wrapped gifts with the name tag taped to the gift to the Sacred Heart Latin Mass. If you lost the tag please put the name on the gift, so it goes to the designated resident. If you would like to deliver the gifts yourself please join the residents at their home in Santa Cruz on Saturday, December 17th at 4:30. Bring the gifts and a dish to share. If you plan on attending please let me know by early next week, so I can give the director the number of us that will be coming. I will also give you the address when you R.S.V.P. Thank you again for making this year's Christmas Outreach a great success!

Sacred Heart Latin Mass Christmas outreach update:
Happy Advent!! Thank you to all those who took an ornament from our JMJ home tree. The Jesus Mary Joseph Home is located in Santa Cruz. It is a shelter for homeless mothers and their children. They also take in the terminally ill. It is a unique home in the community.
For the passed 5 years the Latin Mass community has brought the families gifts for Christmas. It is a special time of year to show God's love through charity and compassion. Here is a link to the home, so you can read up on this special place: http://www.stfrancissoupkitchen.org/jmj.html
If you did pick an ornament today please hold onto it. You will place the tag ornament on the wrapped gift and bring it before or after Mass up until December 11th.
If you would like to deliver the gifts yourself please do so and join our community for a Christmas Party at the home on Sat., Dec. 17th. at 4:30. More on the party in the weeks ahead.
The tree set up next Sunday on the 4th. for those who missed the chance to pick an ornament gift tag. We have plenty left over, so please be open to getting involved and helping those in need.

New choir loft railing

Here are before and after pictures of Sacred Heart Church's choir loft railing - a special thank you to Latin Mass parishioners Perry Hall and Adam Nannini for fabricating and installing the beautiful new railing this past week. The Monterey Bay Area Latin Mass Community is moving

Starting Trinity Sunday, May 22, the old Sacred Heart Church in Hollister will become the new site for the Traditional Latin Mass in the Monterey Bay Area.
A Misa Cantata--also known as a sung High Mass--will be offered on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. in the historic church located at 680 College Street in Hollister (95023).
A reception will follow in the courtyard outside the church.
Although much work remains to be done, the Latin Mass community is restoring the sanctuary of the old church, following as much as possible the original design. The restoration work and other improvements will continue in the months to come.
The Latin Mass community, which has been active in the Monterey Diocese for eight years, most recently at the chapel of a Catholic cemetery near Salinas, will now become part of the St. Benedict’s parish. It has been the only public Mass regularly offered in the ancient rite in the Monterey Bay Area. The Traditional Latin or Tridentine Mass is the classic rite of the Roman Catholic Church and was the norm until it was replaced in most churches in the late 1960s by a new form of Mass celebrated in modern languages.  Monterey Bishop Richard Garcia has supported the restoration of the Mass and of Sacred Heart Church, as has Fr. Claudio Cabrera, the new pastor of St. Benedict’s Parish.

Savory Sundays

Thanks to all of you who contribute to our weekly Sunday potluck table. We are going to try something new for the New Year. Hearing from many people (except the children of course) that their minds and bodies are fatiguing of the sweets, we have decided to designate one Sunday a month to "healthier" options. So starting this Sunday, January 3rd., and then every first Sunday of the month we will have "Savory Sunday". We encourage everyone to leave the sweets at home and bring high protein, healthy options. Some ideas for these Sundays could be any hot food item such as soups and stews or sandwiches, cheese and crackers, salads, fruits and healthy dips. Cold or hot beverages are also welcomed. See you at the potluck table! -Pam Flanders

Gifts should be returned to our Mass site by December 12th. We will be presenting these gifts to the residents of the JMJ home on the 19th. of December. Any of you are welcome to come with us for this joyous celebration.

Pope Benedict XV, addressing seminarians in Rome:
"Let all of you have a common language and a common armor: The language, the sentences of the Gospel - the common armor, the Brown Scapular of the Virgin of Carmel which you ought to wear and which enjoys the singular privilege and protection after death."

Pope Pius XII referred to the Scapular as “The Sign of Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.” The Pope also said the Scapular marks us as one of Mary’s chosen children, and becomes for us a “Garment of Grace.”

All Saints/All Souls activities this Sunday, Nov. 1st., 2015

A reminder that our All Saints/All Souls Activities are this Sunday, Nov. 1st. We will be praying the Litany of the Saints after Mass, and then proceed directly out to the grave sites. Directly after the procession we will have a taco bar lunch available for all. Please join us as there will be plenty to eat. We encourage the children to dress in their favorite saint costume, although we ask that they refrain from wearing the costumes to Mass due to the distraction. Please assist your children to dress right after Mass so they can join the procession in the cemetery. Parents may want to bring costumes that can slip on over clothing, as we only have 2 bathrooms.
