JMJ Home Christmas outreach update

JMJ Home Christmas outreach update from Erin Walbeck:
This coming Sunday I will have the JMJ Home tree set up again in the vestibule of Sacred Heart Church for anyone that was unable to pick an ornament, or maybe you want to grab another one.
There are 5 children ornaments and 6 mom gift card ornaments left. The amount on the gift card is your choice. It gives the mom a chance to buy whatever need may come up or get something for herself.
One mom is asking for pots, pans and dishes. She was a resident with her son and they just moved out 2 weeks ago. She has a steady job and was able to get a home of their own. That is why she is requesting those items.
We have been invited to the home on Saturday, December 17th. at 4:30. Bring the gifts and a dish to share. They so enjoy our presence and love to give thanks in person. If you are able to make it please R.S.V.P. to me, so that I can give the director an idea of numbers.
Thank you for opening your hearts and wallets this Advent season.
Erin Walbeck

Update:
Happy Advent! This Sunday is the day to bring the gifts for the Jesus Mary Joseph home. Please bring the wrapped gifts with the name tag taped to the gift to the Sacred Heart Latin Mass. If you lost the tag please put the name on the gift, so it goes to the designated resident. If you would like to deliver the gifts yourself please join the residents at their home in Santa Cruz on Saturday, December 17th at 4:30. Bring the gifts and a dish to share. If you plan on attending please let me know by early next week, so I can give the director the number of us that will be coming. I will also give you the address when you R.S.V.P. Thank you again for making this year's Christmas Outreach a great success!
God bless, Erin Walbeck

Sacred Heart Latin Mass Christmas outreach update, 2016

Sacred Heart Latin Mass Christmas outreach update from Erin Walbeck:
Happy Advent!! Thank you to all those who took an ornament from our JMJ home tree. I want to explain what the home is about for those who are new to our community. The Jesus Mary Joseph Home is located in Santa Cruz. It is a shelter for homeless mothers and their children. They also take in the terminally ill. It is a unique home in the community.
For the passed 5 years the Latin Mass community has brought the families gifts for Christmas. It is a special time of year to show God's love through charity and compassion. I am including a link to the home, so you can read up on this special place: http://www.stfrancissoupkitchen.org/jmj.html
If you did pick an ornament today please hold onto it. You will place the tag ornament on the wrapped gift. I am keeping track of the gifts by the gift tags. You can give the wrap gift to me before or after Mass up until December 11th. or I can make arrangements and pick up at a later date.
If you would like to deliver the gifts yourself please do so and join us for a Christmas Party at the home on Sat., Dec. 17th. at 4:30. I have extended the invitation to Abbe' Hugues Beaugrand and his Superior. I hope they are able to join us. More on the party in the weeks ahead.
I will have the tree set up next Sunday on the 4th. for those who missed the chance to pick an ornament gift tag. We have plenty left over, so please be open to getting involved and helping those in need.
Thank you for your generosity and kindness.
God bless,
Erin Walbeck

Sacred Heart Latin Mass Assistance

The new High Altar at Sacred Heart Church - Photo credit and thanks to Linda Renz

This past Sunday at Sacred Heart Latin Mass in Hollister, Chaplain Fr. Nicholas Milich mentioned in his sermon the need for parishioners to get more involved. Many people have asked how they can help; here is a list of needs and who to contact. Please email LatinMass@SHSBParish and mention what area you would like to assist in.
Altar Servers -  This is the greatest area of need. All men and boys who have received First Communion are encouraged to learn how to serve at the altar. For more information on how you can serve, contact Altar Server coordinator Adam Nannini.
Music - You do not need to be a professional, or even musically trained.  Just a voice, a willingness to learn, and a desire to worship is needed.  Practice is held an hour before Mass. To inquire about joining the Schola, contact Music Director Greg Plese.
Hospitality -  There is coffee and snacks after each Sunday Mass, if you would like to bring some food, or help set up or take down, contact Susie AmRhein.
Outreach & General Help - If you would like to help hand out Latin Mass information cards, welcome newcomers, put out flyers, or any other general help areas, contact June Ely.

The Traditional Latin Mass Community of St. Junipero Serra

In the Southern part of the Diocese of Monterey, the Traditional Latin Mass Community of St. Junipero Serra has Mass every Sunday at Saint Paul the Apostle Church, 800 Bello Street, Pismo Beach, CA 93449. Confession and Rosary between noon and 12:25, Mass at 12:30 pm. Beginning Nov. 13th., 2016, the Latin Mass on Sunday's will no longer be at 12:30 pm.  Mass will instead be offered at 3:30 pm by Fr. Beaugrand, IBP

From their website:
The Traditional Latin Mass Community of Saint Junipero Serra serves those members of Christ's Faithful who worship in accordance with the traditional Latin Liturgy (or Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite) of the Catholic Church. The Sacred Liturgy is celebrated with the Roman liturgical books of 1962. Not merely its lawfulness, but the continued importance of the traditional Latin Liturgy for the faith and life of the Church, already affirmed by  St. John Paul II in 'Ecclesia Dei,' was further emphasized and guaranteed by Pope Benedict XVI, in 'Summorum Pontificum.'
The traditional Latin Liturgy is centered on God as its core.  The Traditional Latin Mass as it has developed through the centuries, under the gentle influence of the Holy Spirit, bears treasures of language, music and ritual that raise our hearts and minds to the presence and action of Almighty God, in order to praise Him and to witness to the Gospel message given to us by Christ Jesus our Savior.

The Monterey Bay Area Latin Mass community is moving

Starting Trinity Sunday, May 22, the old Sacred Heart Church in Hollister will become the new site for the Traditional Latin Mass in the Monterey Bay Area.
A Misa Cantata--also known as a sung High Mass--will be offered on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. in the historic church located at 680 College Street in Hollister (95023).
A reception will follow in the courtyard outside the church.
Although much work remains to be done, the Latin Mass community is restoring the sanctuary of the old church, following as much as possible the original design. The restoration work and other improvements will continue in the months to come.
The Latin Mass community, which has been active in the Monterey Diocese for eight years, most recently at the chapel of a Catholic cemetery near Salinas, will now become part of the Hollister parish. It has been the only public Mass regularly offered in the ancient rite in the Monterey Bay Area.   The Traditional Latin or Tridentine Mass is the classic rite of the Roman Catholic Church and was the norm until it was replaced in most churches in the late 1960s by a new form of Mass celebrated in modern languages.  Monterey Bishop Richard Garcia has supported the restoration of the Mass and of Sacred Heart Church, as has Fr. Claudio Cabrera, the new pastor of the Hollister parish.

Ash Wednesday 2016

Lent arrives this Wednesday, February 10th. We will have Mass at 6 p.m. with distribution of Ashes. But Lent is also a time for fasting, prayer and penance. Traditional Lenten fasting was rigorous. And even in the 20th century it involved fasting every day (except for an occasional Holy Day). Fasting is not just giving up something like candy. It is usually understood as one normal sized meal a day, and two smaller meals which combined are less than a full meal. Only at that meal was meat allowed. And of course, no meat was allowed on Ash Wednesday nor on any Friday, with the exception of Holy Days of obligation, just as during the rest of the year. Abstinence was required from seven years old on. Fasting applied to those aged 21-59, with exceptions made for the sick, certain workers, pregnant and nursing women, etc. That discipline was in effect until about 50 years ago. Now, fasting is only required on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday (along with abstinence from meat of course on both days). Abstinence is required for those from 14 on, and fasting goes from 18 to 59. So, the LAW of the Church currently does not ask for as much--but people are still free to take on the older discipline. And in fact, most traditional Catholics practice at least part of the older discipline because it is, well, a discipline, undertaken for Christ.
Have a blessed Lent
Fr. Nicholas Milich

Savory Sundays

Thanks to all of you who contribute to our weekly Sunday potluck table. We are going to try something new for the New Year. Hearing from many people (except the children of course) that their minds and bodies are fatiguing of the sweets, we have decided to designate one Sunday a month to "healthier" options. So starting this Sunday, January 3rd., and then every first Sunday of the month we will have "Savory Sunday". We encourage everyone to leave the sweets at home and bring high protein, healthy options. Some ideas for these Sundays could be any hot food item such as soups and stews or sandwiches, cheese and crackers, salads, fruits and healthy dips. Cold or hot beverages are also welcomed. See you at the potluck table! -Pam Flanders
