Update from Seminarian Andrew Rapoport

The following is a letter from seminarian Andrew Rapoport, FSSP, who recently visited Sacred Heart Church in Hollister and assisted our Chaplain Fr. Nicholas Milich at Mass:

Dear Monterey Latin Mass Community,

It was a pleasure being able to visit for Mass on the Octave Day of the Nativity. It has been a while since I've informed the community on my progress here at the seminary, so a quick update is due.

After spending a month at the FSSP parish in Vancouver, B.C. this past summer, I stared my sixth year of Seminary in August. My Fall semester went well. I had a number of different theology classes and Homiletics. Learning how to preach was challenging but I certainly enjoyed the experience.

My second semester of the sixth year started this past week. My class schedule will be pretty busy. I have Bioethics, Theological Virtues, a class on the Sacrament of Penance, a music class and Scripture.

I was informed recently by the Superior General that I have been approved for ordination to the Subdiaconate, the Diaconate and permanent incorporation into the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter. The ordination to the Subdiaconate will be Feb. 11th. and the Diaconate ordination will be on March 25th., both are here in Nebraska. I ask that you please keep me in your prayers. These ordinations are open to the public, so if anyone from the community is interested in attending please let me know.

This summer will be quite eventful for me. God willing, my whole class of ten will be visiting the Fraternity's seminary in Germany in June. While there, we will attend the priestly ordinations. We will do much sight seeing and have an opportunity to take part in the Chartres pilgrimage.

After a month in Germany, I hope to take advantage of being in Europe and do some traveling of my own. I plan to visit Rome, Spain and Portugal. As this year marks the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of Fatima, I greatly look forward to visiting Our Lady's shrine. If time permits I will also visit the Portuguese islands of the Azores (I am part Portuguese and still have some distant relatives on the islands).

After this time in Europe, I plan to go to Nigeria. One of my good friends, Deacon Charles Ike, is from Nigeria and will be ordained to the priesthood there. I volunteered to help with his ordination which will be on August 15th. During that time, I will help at the Fraternity's mission parish as well as help with a boys camp.

Following this busy summer, by God's grace I will return for my seventh and final year of seminary.

I would like to thank you for the support you have given me these past years. The fundraiser which which was held last year was a great success; the money which was raised along with annual donations which I receive have been enough to cover my tuition for at least the rest of this year.

I will need, however, to come up with the funds to cover my trip to Nigeria; this includes a travel visa, vaccinations and a flight from Europe to Nigeria. I would greatly appreciate any financial assistance that you might be willing to offer (no matter how small the donation).

I greatly appreciate all of your prayers. Please continue to pray for me as I approach Holy Orders. Be assured of my prayers the Latin Mass Community.

In Jesus and Mary,
Andrew

Seminarian Christmas greeting and update 2014

The following is a Christmas greeting and update from Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter seminarian Andrew Rapoport, FSSP:

Dear Latin Mass Community,

I wish all of you a very blessed Christmas. I hope everything is going well on the Central Coast.
Things are great here in Nebraska. On the 19th I finished my finals for this semester. This is my first year of Theology and I have enjoyed all of my classes so far, though some were quite challenging. I had Moral Theology, Introduction to Dogmatic Theology, De Deo Uno (the study of the One God), Patristics, Canon Law, Scripture and Latin.
We recently finished construction on a new gymnasium, complete with basketball court, indoor track and weight room. It is great, especially now in the winter when the highs during the day are frequently below freezing.
On the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe we had a Pontifical High Mass with the Bishop of Lincoln, Bishop Conelly in the morning. In the afternoon the seminarians of St. Gregory's Seminary (the Seminary of Lincoln) came over for a basketball game, Vespers and dinner. It was very nice to meet the other seminarians. It was impressive to see them all, including their rector, in cassocks. Everyone enjoyed the evening. We are planning to visit St. Greg's next semester.
On Nov. 22nd. I received the minor orders of Exorcist and Acolyte, which are the last of the minor orders before the sub-diaconate. On October 18th my good friend form college, Matthew Gonzalez was tonsured and received the cassock. I had the pleasure of serving at the Pontifical Mass. His family came out from Bakersfield and we had a very nice weekend with them.
I apologize that I have not been more consistent with my updates for the community. I do continue to pray everyday for the community. I am still on the email list, I enjoy receiving updates, prayer requests and hearing about special events.
I ask for your prayers, especially during my holiday travels. I thank all of you who have been praying for my vocation, May God reward you! I look forward to visiting Queen of Heaven in January.

In Jesus and Mary,

Andrew Rapoport, FSSP

Secretary's Note:
The seminarians are required to provide $7,000 for tuition each year. Any financial contributions would be of great assistance.

Seminarian Update

The following is an update from Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter seminarian Andrew Rapoport:

Everything is going very well for me. I enjoyed my summer but I'm
definitely glad to be back at the seminary.
Last week we had a 5 day silent retreat in preparation for the new
academic year. This week is our first week of classes. I am beginning my
first year of philosophy. I have 3 philosophy classes along with Latin,
Church history, Gregorian Chant and a class on the Roman Missal. I have
not had any previous philosophy classes so I'm greatly looking forward to
this experience.
Later this week 16 new first year men will be arriving.
On October 20th my class will have our tonsure ceremony. There will be a
Solemn Pontifical Mass and I will receive the cassock. My family and some
of my friends will be coming, so I'm excited for that.
I hope everything has been going well for you and the Latin Mass
community. I continue to pray for all of you and especially Fr. Milich.
Please keep me in your prayers as well.

In Jesus and Mary,
Andrew Rapoport

A Letter To Our Community From A Seminarian

Recently the Monterey Bay Area Latin Mass Community received the following letter from a Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter Seminarian, who credits in part our Latin Mass for his decision to enter the priesthood. Thank you for any support you are able to send him.

I am a first year seminarian at Our Lady of Guadalupe Seminary in Denton, Nebraska. I am originally from Los Osos, Ca (15 min. from San Luis Obispo.) The reason I am contacting the Monterey Bay Area Latin Mass Community is because the High Mass that used to be at Mission San Juan Bautista played an important role in my discernment.
I started to discern the priesthood in August of 2010 after I began to feel an interior calling. At the time I had no clear idea of where God was calling me. I had been going to the Newman Center at Cal Poly and I met some very devout young Catholics. One of my more traditional friends invited me to the Byzantine Liturgy and then to the Traditional Latin Mass. After these experiences, I had a great desire to learn more about the traditions of the Catholic Church. I started to read books about the Blessed Sacrament and the Holy Mass.
Before long, my friend and I planned a trip to San Juan Bautista for the Sung Latin Mass. This was our first time to a High Mass and we were completely amazed, especially by the beautiful Gregorian Chant and Fr. Milich's powerful preaching. After that I definitely felt God calling me to pursue the traditional priesthood. I had been doing much research online and came across the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter. I was attracted by the seriousness with they placed on the formation of priests and their love for the Traditional Latin Mass. I soon arranged a meeting with an F.S.S.P. priest at their apostolate in San Diego. The meeting went very well and the priest encouraged me to apply to the seminary for the following year. Two months later I visited the seminary. This also went very smoothly. I got along well with the seminarians and was impressed by the formation program. I was most impressed by the reverence of the priests and seminarians.
Upon returning home, I began the application process. I continued to prayerfully discern and I would attend the Latin Mass at Mission San Juan Bautista when I had the chance. In May of 2011 I attended the F.S.S.P. vocation retreat and was accepted to Our Lady of Guadalupe Seminary in July.
Being here at the seminary has been a great blessing. We have daily Mass and we chant Lauds, Sext, Vespers, and Compline in common. The classes have been excellent and I have met many outstanding seminarians.
If any members of the Latin Mass Community are interested in sponsoring
me, if there are any questions, my address is:

Andrew Rapoport
7880 West Denton Rd.,
P.O. Box 147
Denton, NE 68339

The seminarians here are required to provide $7,000 for tuition each year. Any financial contributions would be of great assistance.
My Summer break begins in the end of May and I am definitely looking forward to attending the Holy Latin Mass with the Monterey Bay Area Latin Mass community. Until then I will continue to keep the Latin Mass Community in my prayers.

In Jesus and Mary,
Andrew Rapoport
